Recommended Reading
Ideals and Ideologies: A Reader (7th Edition) by Richard Dagger and Terrance Ball; this is the best introduction to political idealogy and the study of poltical theory I have come across. highly readable, consice, and on point.
Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001 by Steve Coll; The definitive single volume history of the afghan conflict, America’s involvement in it, the rise of Bin Laden and what lessons we must learn form this to prevent terrorism and failed states in the future. The best part is it reads like fiction.
International Ethics: Concepts, Theories, and Cases in Global Politics by Mark Amstutz; fantastic look at the moral and ethical debates in international relations. Provides a clear concise explanation of pressing issues in contemporary I.R. studies. Additionally, it provides case studies to help attach the theory to reality. Highly recommended.
The American Political Tradition by Richard Hofstadter- Seminal work on the development of the political consciousness of America. Hofstadter chronicles history of political thought by writing fantastic biographical sketches of important American figures who contributed to the political fabric of America. If you only read on book on American politics read this one because it will explain so much of why we are who we are as a nation politically.
